UGA Public Relations Coordinator Says Journalism is Changing

Journalism is changing as newsrooms focus more on daily online updates, citizen contributions and less staff, a 2002 Grady College of Journalism and Mass Communication graduate said to a University of Georgia journalism class.

“Most weekly papers today have become more daily on their websites. Daily papers have become hourly news feeds,” said Merritt Melancon, who is also a public relations coordinator at the UGA College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences.

Melancon referenced two examples of how citizen contribution to the news has thinned staffs at newspapers and has increased demand for consistent online updates.

Melancon noted “Spotted,” an online section from the Athens Banner-Herald which features pictures from amateur photographers whom attended an event the paper covered. Melancon said the more citizens contribute to “Spotted,” the less staff the paper requires.
